IPMA Levels (A-D)

Introduction to IPMA’s Four-Level Certification (4-L-C) System

The International Project Management Association (IPMA) is a global leader in competency-based professional certifications for project, programme, and portfolio management. Its unique Four-Level Certification (4-L-C®) system assesses and validates a professional's demonstrated competence—their knowledge, experience, and personal attitude—rather than just theoretical knowledge. This system provides a structured career path, allowing professionals to be certified at a level matching their current experience and to progress to higher levels as they advance.

The following table provides a concise overview of all four IPMA certification levels, including their focus and availability in the Philippines:

Detailed Level Overview

Level D: Certified Project Management Associate
This is the entry point into the IPMA system, designed for those new to project management or supporting project teams. It certifies foundational knowledge of the competence elements described in the IPMA Individual Competence Baseline® (ICB). The assessment is a written examination.

Level C: Certified Project Manager
Aimed at active project managers, Level C validates the competence to manage projects with moderate complexity independently. Candidates must demonstrate practical experience through a multi-stage assessment that includes an exam, a report on their project work, and a professional interview.

Level B: Certified Senior Project Manager
This advanced level is for professionals leading complex projects, programmes, or portfolios. The assessment is rigorous, requiring candidates to evidence their leadership and management competencies through a detailed report, an oral exam, and an in-depth interview.

Level A: Certified Projects Director
The highest level of IPMA certification, Level A recognizes strategic leaders who direct highly complex initiatives with significant organizational impact. Candidates must prove extensive experience at a strategic level and are assessed via a comprehensive report and interview.

Pathway for Professionals in the Philippines

As noted, IPMA Philippines currently administers certifications for Levels C and D locally. For professionals seeking Level A or B certification, the recommended paths are to await their future introduction by IPMA Philippines.

All IPMA certifications require periodic re-certification (typically every five years) through a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program to ensure certified professionals maintain and update their competencies
